I’m watching the House marathon on USA and it’s the episode where Omar Epps’ character is infected by the mysterious virus that is killing him. He’s in tons of pain and asks for a brain autopsy that could kill him sooner than the virus. House tells him no because he’s asking out of his pain and not his thinking mind. As House puts it, pain motivates us to make bad decisions.
Single women everywhere can likely relate to that statement. Pain from relationships gone bad can make you do crazy things. Like, abandoning your faith because God could not have allowed you to hurt that way if He loved you. That was my personal story. After my heart was broken I didn’t want to know God anymore. It was a decision made out of complete pain and hurt. It was a decision that costed me greatly.
How often have we allowed our emotions to determine our decisions only to have them haunt us in the future? We don’t have to live in pain. God does promise healing from our pain and mending for our broken hearts, so our decisions can be made through thoughtful prayer. This is no gaurantee against bad decision-making but you can stop pain from being your motivator.
